Baptist Distinctives
Good News Bible College & Seminary is rooted in Baptist convictions that have shaped evangelical Christianity for over 500 years. These distinctives define our identity and mission.
Biblical Authority
The Bible is the sole authority for faith and practice. Baptists historically rejected human traditions and ecclesiastical hierarchies that contradicted Scripture. We teach verse-by-verse biblical exposition as the foundation of all ministry.
Believer's Baptism
Baptism is for those who have made a personal commitment to Christ. We practice believer's baptism (credobaptism), not infant baptism. Each person must personally confess faith before water baptism.
Congregational Autonomy
The local church is autonomous under Christ's headship. Baptist churches govern themselves through congregational meetings. No denominational hierarchy controls individual churches, though we maintain fellowship and cooperation.
Priesthood of All Believers
Every Christian has direct access to God through Christ. There is no special clergy class that mediates salvation or intercedes for others. All believers are priests with equal privilege and responsibility.
Religious Freedom & Conscience
Baptists historically championed separation of church and state and freedom of conscience. No government should coerce religious belief. Each individual must make voluntary choices about faith without state or ecclesiastical compulsion.
Missionary Passion
Baptists have always emphasized evangelism and missions. From William Carey (father of modern missions) to contemporary efforts, Baptist theology motivates urgent proclamation of the gospel to unreached peoples globally.
Historical Baptist Legacy
Baptist history stretches back to the Reformation era, when believers resisted state-church alliances and demanded biblical Christianity based on personal conversion. Early Baptists faced persecution for these convictions, yet they persisted in maintaining biblical truth.
William Carey (1761-1834), an English Baptist minister, is honored as the "father of modern missions." His commitment to taking the gospel to unreached peoples established a pattern followed by Baptist missionaries worldwide.
Baptist distinctives include:
- Sola Scriptura: Scripture alone is authoritative for faith and practice
- Soul Competency: Each person can interpret Scripture and respond to God without institutional mediation
- Separation of Church and State: Civil government has no authority over matters of conscience
- Evangelistic Fervor: The Great Commission motivates urgent gospel proclamation
These convictions remain central to GNBCS identity. Our faculty, curriculum, and institutional practice reflect unwavering commitment to biblical authority, local church autonomy, and gospel mission.
GNBCS Commitment to Baptist Distinctives
Every program at GNBCS trains leaders to understand, defend, and live out Baptist convictions in contemporary contexts. Our students learn not just theology but the historical and biblical reasoning behind these distinctives.
We equip pastors and church leaders to:
- Preach the Word with biblical authority
- Lead congregations in democratic self-governance
- Mobilize churches for evangelical witness and missions
- Maintain doctrinal integrity in an increasingly pluralistic world
- Contextualize Baptist heritage for 21st-century ministry
GNBCS exists to strengthen Baptist churches across India and globally by training leaders who are biblically grounded, theologically articulate, and missionally passionate.
